list & define 7 punctuation symbols:
- period - marks the end of a sentence
- comma - shows a seperation of words
- semi colon - seperates two sentences so closely linked, it would be impractical to
seperate with a period
- colon - precedes a list of items
- parenthesis - information not critical to the sentence
- apostrophe - marks a contraction
- quotation marks - shows the begginning and end of a quotation
note 33 grammar rules:
- a sentence needs a noun subject and a verb
- use may for permission
- use can for ability
- use I in the subject portion
- use me in the object portion
- use who before a verb
- use whom after a preposition or before a noun
- when separating a word, split it at the syllables
- two or more adjectives before a noun, separate with commas
- capitalize all proper nouns
- capitalize the names of particular items
- a pronoun requires and antecedent
- an antecedent is the noun a pronoun replaces
- a quotation requires attribution, who said it
- a gerund is an -ing word used as a noun (swimming)
- an apostrophe marks possession
- add 's to singular nouns to show possession (boy's)
- add s' to plural nouns (boys')
- use a before words beginning with a consonant
- use an before words beginning with a vowel
- a lot is informal and should be avoided
- between involves two things
- among suggests three or more
- use well as an adverb
- use good as an adjective
- use imply for the speaker
- use infer for the listener
- lie means rest or recline
- lay means to put to rest
- than is used for comparison

- nouns & verbs are placed on horizontal lines when diagramming a sentence
